Tintin in the Land of the Soviets (Polikarpov I-1)

March 14, 2018As always, the box... I love the box.2
March 14, 2018Not much inside the box...3
March 14, 2018First order of business... get rid of the ejection oin marks4
March 15, 2018Added sidewall details, removed the pedals and modified the seat.5
March 15, 2018A bit of trimming and it all fits inside.6
March 20, 2018Interior painted bare alluminium7
March 20, 2018Scratch built pedals and seat upgrades. Painted the cockpit floor to resemble wood.8
March 23, 2018Cockpit addons... added. Time to close it up.9
March 23, 2018The wings were a bit fussy, but I clamped them into submission.10
March 29, 2018Scratch built the front screen11
March 29, 2018Glued in place..12
March 29, 2018Had to redo the tail, so I decided to laminate a few strips of styrene to give it some thickness.13
March 30, 2018Scratched up new landing struts using leftover resin bits.14
March 30, 2018The landing struts are a bit rough, but it's the best option I have available.15
April 4, 2018First coat of paint shows all the flaws.16
April 4, 2018Second coat is better, but I think the green might be too light.17
April 28, 2018Another witch's brew of Tamiya acrylic paints and I'm happy enough with the colour.18
April 28, 2018Now for the propeller. In the story Tintin carves a new propeller from a tree using only his pocketknife... I figured I couldn't do less. 😉19
April 29, 2018All done!20
April 29, 2018I think the propeller came out alright. Maybe just a bit dark, but who's complaining?21
April 29, 2018From this angle there's no silvering on the decals... I like this angle.22
April 29, 2018A bit here, but the homemade decals were a bit fussy, so I'm not going to get to fussed about it.23
May 6, 2018A bit of cotton, some hairspray and some paint, and we have a base dio.24
May 6, 2018Not quite happy with the stand... needs a bit of work yet.25
May 7, 2018Got the stand fixed up by adding some friction pads of hot glue to keep it from sliding off.26
May 7, 2018I didn't like how the wire lightning was working, so I decided to add a small LED light to the middle of the cloud. Much better.27

February 14, 2022Hang on... let's UPGRADE!34
February 14, 2022Disassembled as gently as possible. Adding a propellor motor and some blinking lightning flashes.35
February 14, 2022Fits... like a glove!36
February 14, 2022It spins! Now to turn our attention to the pilot!37
February 14, 2022After trimming some legs, Tintin fits into the cockpit.38
February 15, 2022A very careful paint job.39
February 15, 2022And voila! All done! No more "ghost plane!"40
